- Multiple quotes. Prices for the same job can vary by 50% or more between contractors. Getting at least two or three quotes isn't just about price — it tells you whether a bid is unusually low (often a sign of corner-cutting) or fair.
- Manufacturer certification. Contractors certified by the brand they're installing (Carrier, Trane, Lennox, etc.) often carry better warranty backing than uncertified installers.
Understanding What Drives Your Cost
- HVAC pricing isn't one-size-fits-all. The biggest factors are:
- SEER rating (efficiency) — higher SEER units cost more upfront but lower your energy bill over time
- Ductwork condition — if your existing ducts are damaged or undersized, that adds to the job
- Size of the unit — bigger isn't always better; an oversized unit cycles inefficiently and wears out faster
- Labor and local permit costs — these vary significantly by city and contractor
- Financing Is Usually More Available Than People Think
Most homeowners don't pay for a full HVAC replacement out of pocket. Many contractors and lenders offer 0%–low interest financing for 12–24 months, and some utility companies offer rebates for high-efficiency systems. It's worth asking every contractor you quote what financing they offer before you compare final prices — the sticker price alone doesn't tell the whole story.

- No written estimate, only a verbal number
- Reluctance to provide references or licensing info
